HELP for AOL users

The browser supplied by AOL is NOT able to communicate with our catalog. However, AOL versions 3.0 and 4.0 let you run any Internet program over your AOL connection, and that means you can use any Web browser - including those that CAN communicate with our catalog!

  • The latest browser from Microsoft can be retrieved from Microsoft Corporation

  • The latest* browser from Netscape can be retrieved from Netscape Corporation

Once you've installed one of these browsers, follow the directions below to use them.  If you continue to have trouble, contact AOL tech support for information about how to use Netscape 4.0 or Internet Explorer 4.0 with your AOL internet account.  They can walk you through the process.

How To Use Another Browser with your AOL connection:

    1. Sign on to AOL.  Seeing the Welcome screen or hearing the 'Welcome' sound confirms that you've signed on.

    2. Open the browser of your choice by clicking on the icon created when you installed it (most likely the icon was placed on your desktop).  You can begin to 'surf' immediately.

Once you sign off of AOL, your Internet connection is lost, and you won't be able to use other Internet applications until you've signed on to it again.

Tip: Always be sure to open the AOL software *before* the Web browser software.  You may have problems using the browser if you open it before signing on to AOL.

Tip: Periodically check the AOL software by making it the active window on your computer screen while you are going through the catalog.  AOL regularly forces you to confirm that you are still 'active' on the network.

Note: If you are using Windows95, and wish to use Windows95 (32-bit) Internet Software, you must use the Windows95 version of AOL.  Click on the 'Help Menu' and choose 'About America Online'.  If it does not say 'for Windows95', then you have the regular Windows (Win3.x) version.  You need to download and install the Windows95 version, which you can get at Keyword: upgrade.

Press the Back button on your browser's tool bar to return to the previous page

    * Netscape Communicator Version 4.5 is not recommended due to the instability we have experienced.  To upgrade your Netscape browser, click on the 'Netscape Product Archive' link under the 'Download Netscape Products and Accessories' heading on Netscape's product page.  From the resultant page, select the Communicator 4.05 version.
